Art Program and Skill Goals

 

The art program at St. Bernard Regional Catholic School is a process of developing both mental and motor skills - starting in kindergarten and progressing through sixth grade. As students use a hands-on approach in creating a variety of personal artistic creations, they are surrounded by visuals that support the concepts being explored.

 

Introductions to each lesson include opportunities for students to verbally express their ideas. Interaction with the teacher and peers during class promotes positive social development.

 

Skill Goals

·         Developing fine motor skills and eye/hand coordination

·         Developing a positive self-confidence and awareness of personal individuality through artistic expression

·         Developing social skills

·         Developing observation skills

·         Developing decision making abilities

·         Developing creative problem solving abilities

·         Developing awareness of our culture and that of others

·         Developing art history awareness

·         Learning how to use a variety of art media, techniques and processes (e.g. various kinds of drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, fiber arts, graphic design, collage and digital photography)

·         Learning how to use elements and principles of design in art works

·         Learning specific Art vocabulary and concepts

·         Learning to "think outside the box"

 

The objectives for each art lesson/project are explained as it is introduced and students are encouraged to work toward achieving these in uniquely individual expressions of their ideas. Whether working alone or in pairs or groups, students should be supportive of one another and show respect for others.
